Colistin Sulphate............. 36.000.000 IU
Excipients q.s............................. 100 g
DESCRIPTION:
Medicinal premix to add to feed in the oral treatment of poultry, pigs and calves.
INDICATIONS:
For the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal infections caused by organisms sensitive to colistin, gram-negative and particularly colibacillosis and salmonellosis.
Rheincol Px is indicated for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal affections caused by organisms sensitive to colistin, in particular, calves, pigs and poultry colibacillosis and salmonellosis. Oral means colistin usage is common in veterinary medicine.
The sensitivity of the main enteropathogenic in the mentioned species intervene as an ethiologically determining factor in:
a) Calves, pigs and poultry digestive neonatal
affections (colibacillosis in all mentioned species,
salmonellas in poultry)
b) Infectious enteritis in calves with more than three-week lives(colibacillus and salmonellas).
c) Infectious enteritis in pigs within their first weeks
of life during weaning(colibacillosis).
These germs frequently contribute in the development of other gastroenteritic diseases. Colisitin offers another advantage related to the majority of antibiotics: it does not induce antibioresistance except in exceptional cases. In that way, the excellent sensitivity of enterobacteria remains unchanged after the first uses of colistin.
Colistin is not absorbed (or very little) by oral means. It is almost exclusively concentrated in intestinal lumen. That is how it exerts a local anti-infectious activity which is important against sensitive pathogenic organisms that are present in the digestive tube of calves, pigs and poultry. In that way, oral supply of colistin sulphate to the suggested dosage in very young 40-50 kg. weight calves leads to theoretical levels of 20 mcg/ml order, that is to say, 5 to 20 times the minimal inhibitory concentrations of colibacillus and salmonellas.
Colistin is an antibiotic that exerts an action through the cytoplasmic membrane lysis of bacteria.
Gram-positive bacteria are protected by this molecule by the existence of an impermeable wall which is absent in gram-negative bacteria. Therefore colisitin is essentially active against gram-negative bacteria. Nonetheless, some germs related to gram-positive bacteria, as corynebacterium, are sensitive to its bactericidal action.
Certain bacteria sensitive to colistin show a major importance in bovine, porcine and poultry pathology: Escherichia coli, Salmonella sp, Klebsiella sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
